Continuing on from last week… In 1773 the site was owned by Thomas Morley, a butcher.  The site would have a plentiful supply of water which is needed for both the slaughter process and lairage of stock prior to slaughter.  On marrying Phoebe Lodge with the consent of her guardians, it is believed that she had the money to allow the development of the North elevation as it is seen today.  This marks the property’s grandest period.  Within the property it is possible to see where the Medieval Timber Frame was reused in the conversion to form the roof and the central spine of the property.  As was customary at that time the sitting room was located on the first floor on the left of the building. This was a large room running from front to back and was lined with oak panels which were later used to divide the room when it became used as a lodging house.
