Specials for Pea Green Cafe and Supper Solutions

Writing this on Monday I’m bathed in warm sunshine looking at a beautiful riverside setting. When I woke this morning I was looking at an inch of snow covering the garden. So, I’m making no predictions about the coming week other than:-

  • We are serving delicious food for lunch and supper  to deliver to you at home, special menu below.
  • We shall be providing an outside table service for our guests, be it in sunshine or snow!

Yes, finally after what has been a long haul through the winter for all of us we shall be pleased to open up again our outside tables. If you would like to try us for a meal PLEASE ring first to make a reservation, as spaces are limited and will be subject to availability. As you can see below we have re erected our outside shelter, and today it makes a lovely sunshade, It will keep the rain off too, not sure about the snow if that starts again, but you can always ring us first for a weather report!

So our number is 07983 941856, to arrange a home delivery OR to reserve a table. You can order a delivery at any time, days in advance if you wish. The latest time to order same day delivery of lunch is 11AM and supper 3PM. However sometimes we are full by the cut off point so the earlier you let us know the better. Today is the 125th Anniversary of the modern Olympic games. The first Games held under the auspices of the IOC was hosted in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens in 1896. The Games brought together 14 nations and 241 athletes who competed in 43 events. However the modern Olympic movement is older than that as I’m sure many of you know , given it’s local Shropshire connection.  In 1850, an Olympian Class was started by William Penny Brookes at Much Wenlock, in Shropshire, England. In 1859, Brookes changed the name to the Wenlock Olympian Games. This annual sports festival continues to this day. The Wenlock Olympian Society was founded by Brookes on 15 November 1860.

Supper Solutions Special Menu and A Notable Birthday

What a lovely spring morning we have today here in Ludlow central! Splashes of colour popping up in gardens and blossoms budding on the trees, forecast not quite so good however; suggest you stay home and order in a delivery! I’m pleased to bring you our delicious specials to supplement our regular menu. Unique recipe meals freshly cooked and delivered to your door. See below for details.

March 9th is the birthday of one William Cobbett, born in Surrey in 1763. He had an extraordinarily full life, served 5 years as a soldier in the British army in America. Self exiled to France and America, after critisising the low pay and harsh tratment of regular soldiers and fearing arrest for publisising his findings. He founded the forerunner of Hansard, the parliamentary official records, imprisoned for libel for objecting to flogging of militiamen, was elected to parliament as an MP. And so much more besides. He’s best known for his writings as a pamphleteer and his most famous book “Rural Rides” is still in print 199 years after publication.  Thanks to the Gutenberg project you can read a copy or download for free, here’s an extract about his visit to Shrewsbury

I cannot quit Shrewsbury without expressing the great satisfaction that I derived from my visit to that place. …. I saw not one single person in the place that I had ever seen before; yet I never had more cordial shakes by the hand; in proportion to their numbers, not more at Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Halifax, Leeds, or Nottingham, or even Hull. I was particularly pleased with the conduct of the young gentlemen at Shrewsbury

Pea Green Cafe Supper Solution specials and England’s 1st cookery school

Hello and welcome to March. See menu below for details of our specials today. Delicious, nutritious, freshly prepared food delivered to your door at lunch time or in the evening. Just £7.50 for main courses and £9.95 with a pudding.

March 1st 1734 is the day that the earliest known cooking school in England was opened. It was was run by Edward Kidder (d. 1739) in various London locations during the later part of his life. And just as modern day TV chefs always have books to sell so did this pie maker turned teacher. According to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography “It is a valuable record of 170 standard English dishes of the day, accompanied by attractive designs for pie shapes and decorations. The first recipe for puff pastry to appear in print is Kidder’s”. As you can see from the image below it is engraved copper plate rather than moveable type production, so quite difficult to read to my modern eye. Then of course there’s the variation of the English language over 300 years.

Here is one of his receipts with a local connection (!)

The book can be viewed thanks to the wonder of the internet by visiting the Library of Congress and you can click here to download a pdf copy.
It has also been reworked and translated by a modern author and can be downloaded here

Looking at what happened on this day 9th February back over the years. A little bit of synchronicity caught my eye. In 1981 Bill Haley, yes the very same who encouraged people to “Rock Around The Clock” in the 1950’s breathed his last at the very young age of 55. Haley’s band was The Comets and according to wikipedia the same day in 1986 saw the celestial body of Halley’s comet make it’s most recent closest visit to the earth. However it was difficult to see as it was the other side of the sun and January and March views were better.

Now we’re done with January and the lengethening days bringing a promise of spring, with the snowdrops bringing their cheerfulness now they are in full flush. Here’s a snippet of trivia from Feb 2nd years passed. Mark Twain was “Born” on this day in 1863. Of course he was much older than that, but this was the day he first used Mark Twain as a nom de plume when writing in the Virginia newspaper called Territorial Enterprise. He has been attributed with many well known phrases and pithy quotes. One of my personal favourites was “Don’t let schooling interfere with your education.”

Specials and a moment from history

Hello, our regular opening days of Tuesday to Saturday return this week. See below for our specials selection. Available for home and work delivery lunches and suppers.

Looking through historical events in history I happened across an event from 1935. On January 11th the American aviator Amelia Earhart became the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California. She was an amazing pioneer of early aviation, being the first woman to fly the Atlantic (as a passenger in 1928) and the first Woman to fly solo and at the controls of the aircraft in 1932. In this country we probably know more of the British aviator Amy Johnson who was a contemporary of Earhart’s flying from UK to Australia in 1930. Both these amazing pioneers were unfortunate to lose their lives before the age of 40, each doing what they were best known for – flying aircraft. To read more about either of them you can see their wikipedia entries here Earhart and Johnson

New Year Greetings

Hello,

Firstly a Happy New Year to all, wishing us all a better one than 2020 was!

Our opening times are now back to normal I.E. Tuesday through Saturday Lunch and evening. Obviously due to most recent Government announcement regarding covid19 restrictions we are sadly unable to open and welcome you to the cafe. However, for a sneek peak of the cafe you can watch a video by clicking here We continue with home/work delivery of our unique and freshly cooked foods.

To start the new year we have a delicious selection of specials detailed on the menu below.

Twelfth night is upon us (or was it yesterday?) traditionally the time to remove the Christmas decorations, although this tradition is relatively new, being only a couple of hundred years old. Before that it was common for people to keep them in place until February 2nd or Candlemass being the next festival in the Christian calendar. Maybe we should resurrect this idea for a one off this year to get us through the dark days of a January lockdown? Then again thinking about the rate of needle shedding already going on from the past 12 days maybe not!

For lunchtime delivery phone before 11.00AM or supper delivery phone before 3.00PM. Also you can order in advance of the day you would like a delivery. The number to call is 07983 941856. If you’re connected to the answer phone when you call please leave a message and we WILL call you back

Ten Years Later…

So, for the 3rd time this year we are forced to close our cafe as Shropshire moves into tier 3. However we are continuing with our home delivery service for lunch and supper.  We are open today and tomorrow and Saturday. We will be closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday open again on Wednesday 6th Jan. Specials are detailed on the menu below.

With the weather having turned a bit colder this week I thought I’d share some pictures from 10 years ago. During the winter of 2010 to 2011 there was a particularly cold snap around this time of the year. I’m hoping it doesn’t get as cold again this year as it was cold enough to form ice on the river Teme outside the Cafe! A bit of research tells me It was the United Kingdom’s coldest December since Met Office records began in 1910, with an average mean temperature of -1 °C. The coldest temperature in the UK was recorded locally -19.6 °C was recorded in Shawbury, Shropshire. This must be a particularly cold pocket in England as it is also listed as having the lowest recorded temperature of -25.2 in December 1982!
