Specials and a moment from history

Hello, our regular opening days of Tuesday to Saturday return this week. See below for our specials selection. Available for home and work delivery lunches and suppers.

Looking through historical events in history I happened across an event from 1935. On January 11th the American aviator Amelia Earhart became the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California. She was an amazing pioneer of early aviation, being the first woman to fly the Atlantic (as a passenger in 1928) and the first Woman to fly solo and at the controls of the aircraft in 1932. In this country we probably know more of the British aviator Amy Johnson who was a contemporary of Earhart’s flying from UK to Australia in 1930. Both these amazing pioneers were unfortunate to lose their lives before the age of 40, each doing what they were best known for – flying aircraft. To read more about either of them you can see their wikipedia entries here Earhart and Johnson

New Year Greetings

Hello,

Firstly a Happy New Year to all, wishing us all a better one than 2020 was!

Our opening times are now back to normal I.E. Tuesday through Saturday Lunch and evening. Obviously due to most recent Government announcement regarding covid19 restrictions we are sadly unable to open and welcome you to the cafe. However, for a sneek peak of the cafe you can watch a video by clicking here We continue with home/work delivery of our unique and freshly cooked foods.

To start the new year we have a delicious selection of specials detailed on the menu below.

Twelfth night is upon us (or was it yesterday?) traditionally the time to remove the Christmas decorations, although this tradition is relatively new, being only a couple of hundred years old. Before that it was common for people to keep them in place until February 2nd or Candlemass being the next festival in the Christian calendar. Maybe we should resurrect this idea for a one off this year to get us through the dark days of a January lockdown? Then again thinking about the rate of needle shedding already going on from the past 12 days maybe not!

Ten Years Later…

So, for the 3rd time this year we are forced to close our cafe as Shropshire moves into tier 3. However we are continuing with our home delivery service for lunch and supper.  We are open today and tomorrow and Saturday. We will be closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday open again on Wednesday 6th Jan. Specials are detailed on the menu below.

With the weather having turned a bit colder this week I thought I’d share some pictures from 10 years ago. During the winter of 2010 to 2011 there was a particularly cold snap around this time of the year. I’m hoping it doesn’t get as cold again this year as it was cold enough to form ice on the river Teme outside the Cafe! A bit of research tells me It was the United Kingdom’s coldest December since Met Office records began in 1910, with an average mean temperature of -1 °C. The coldest temperature in the UK was recorded locally -19.6 °C was recorded in Shawbury, Shropshire. This must be a particularly cold pocket in England as it is also listed as having the lowest recorded temperature of -25.2 in December 1982!

Pea Green Cafe’s Supper Solutions Christmas Specials

Between now and Christmas we have a traditional roast turkey lunch/supper available for delivery please see below for details.
We also have a range of own cooked seasonal foods (Christmas cake, puds, mincemeat, pies etc) and ingredients to serve at home over the upcoming festivities, a menu of these is also below.
We are having a few days off over Christmas, but will be open between Christmas and New Year, a list of opening hours also below.

I know personally getting ready for Christmas and allowing for shops to be closed a few days takes a bit of planning. Spare a thought for the sheriff of Hampshire who had just 11 days notice for preperations, 800+ years ago King John decided to spend Christmas at Winchester and sent a shopping list.

Once the king had decided where he would spend Christmas Day, a command would be sent to the local sheriff ordering him to rustle-up the necessary supplies. There would be hundreds of mouths to feed, so this was no easy task – in fact King John’s shopping list puts our Christmas-shopping nightmares in the shade. In 1206, an order was dispatched to the sheriff of Hampshire on 13 December to find 1,500 hens, 5,000 eggs, 20 cattle, 100 pigs and 100 sheep for the king’s Christmas festivities at the royal palace of Winchester. Thankfully for the sheriff of Hampshire, the task of ordering the table settings was delegated to his colleague in Wiltshire, who had to procure 500 ells of linen for making tablecloths

Specials & a Literary Birthday

We have some mouthwatering delights available for home delivery from Supper Solutions today. See menu below for details. We can deliver you a 2 course freshly cooked, hot meal ready to eat for lunch or supper.

While looking for a snippet of information from December 1st in history I discovered that in 1887 Arthur Conan Doyle’s book A Study In Scarlet was published, and so maybe should be considered Sherlock Holmes’ birthday. It was published in Beeton’s Christmas Annual, yes that’s the same Mr Beeton who pinched all his wife’s recipes and made them famous! See below for the cover.

We find ourselves on the cusp of another month as November fades to December, we seem poised for another change in government issued regulations to deal with the pandemic. Hopefully Wednesday we shall have moved out of “lockdown” and into tier 2. My understanding of that is that we are allowed to open the cafe again for table service! If you wish to visit us for a meal please call in advance to make sure we have space.

Stir Up Sunday

A couple of wonderfully delicious and warming dishes for our specials this week. See menu below for details of our 2 course meals delivered to your home for lunch or supper only £9.95.

Yesterday was “Stir Up Sunday”. Not, as you might think from the name, a day to cause ructions and arguments; but a day to mix Christmas pudding. The expression comes from a Christian text i.e. the opening words of the collect for the day in the1549 book of common prayer. This comes on the last Sunday before advent which means Christmas itself is approaching fast!

” Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded”

1549 Book of Common Prayer

At the time of writing we don’t know what our permissions are for getting together with family and friends over this year’s festive season, but rest assured if you would like any mincemeat, cake, pudding, brandy sauce etc we will have this available to deliver to you at home. More details following next week.

Specials and a bit if history

See below for our special menu this week, delicious and totally unique to Pea Green customers. Available for lunch or supper delivery from Tuesday to Saturday.

Looking at events from history I noticed that this was the day in 1558 that Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne of England after the death of her half sister Mary. She remained there for nearly 45 years until her death in March 1603 aged 69. Given that average life expectancy at this time was about 40 years it is little surprise that historians talk about the “Elizabethan age”

Sadly the cafe is still closed until early December, or until the government allows us to re open, but in the meantime we can bring delicious meals to your door ready to eat. Alternatively you can collect them from the cafe on Temeside, though you will need to order in advance. Also many of our meals can be purchased to be cooked at home all you need to do is heat and eat! If you order any combination of 5 main courses we give you 10% off. Phone to discuss your requirements

Pea Green Cafe Supper Solutions Specials, and the November outlook

No Warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease

Thomas Hood

So wrote Thomas Hood in his 1844 poem about the month of November. I think possibly even more apt than usual this year with the latest restrictions on lockdown coming into effect on Thursday. Never fear though, here at Pea Green Cafe we are continuing to bring warmth, cheerfulness and healthful ease into your home or workplace. This week we are tempting your tastebuds with a couple of delicious pasta specials to augment our regular varied menu. Details on the menu below

The cafe will be closed from Thursday, sadly, but our deliveries of hot ready to eat lunches and suppers will continue. Many of our customers order several meals at the same time as many of them are also suitable for home freezing or can be delivered ready frozen. With the inevitable disruptions to our normal routines that come with the new lockdown it might be useful for you to keep a couple of meals in store. And remember our 10% discount for 5 or more main dishes. Please phone us to discuss your requirements.

Specials, Christmas and what’s behind the blue gates?

Well the last full week of October is upon us and we have some delicious specials to tantalise your taste buds. Details on the menu below. The half term for schools is starting this weekend and once they go back, assuming they do and we’re not in another lockdown, it seems that christmas preparations are the next thing, in a normal year. However this is not a normal year!

We have already started preparing foods for Christmas as they need time to mature and develop the lovely deep flavours that I always associate with the winter holiday. The mince meat is mixed and will be regularly stirred and checked over the coming weeks. Christmas cakes are baked and will receive a frequent splash of brandy over the next 6 weeks, Christmas pudding mixed and receiving similar lavish attention until they are cooked in December. All will be available for home delivery or eating in the cafe in due course.

We have installed some extra shelter for the autumn and winter months in our outside dining area. A gazebo large enough to accomodate parties of up to 6 people (more than that when we have restrictions on gatherings relaxed!) so you can enjoy a coffee or some lunch even when the weather is not very nice.

We serve lunch in the cafe (please phone for a reservation) from 12 to 2 PM, and home or work delivery for lunch and supper. For lunchtime delivery phone before 11.00AM or supper delivery phone before 3.00PM. Also you can order in advance of the day you would like a delivery. The number to call is 07983 941856. If you’re connected to the answer phone when you call please leave a message and we WILL call you back
