Pea Green Cafe, Supper Solutions Specials

Hello
Please see below for details of our mouth watering specials for today. We can serve these to you at home for lunch or supper, alternatively in the cafe or the riverside terrace for lunch. We open Tuesday through to Saturday and serve breakfasts until 11.30 AM. Lunch is available from mid day, and we recommend you contact us first to book a table. With a very busy Ludlow weekend coming up for the food festival remember the peace and tranquility of our riverside location offers a chance to get away from the hurly burly of the town centre.

It seems like we’re in for a bit of an Indian Summer, the next couple of days at least. I was wondering how it was described in other cultures/languages. A quick wikipedia search showed me these variations:

“Similar weather conditions, with local variations also exist. A warm period in autumn is called “Altweibersommer” (“old women’s summer”) in Germany, and in a number of Slavic-language countries. In Bulgaria and Serbia, it is known as “gypsy summer” or “poor man’s summer”. In Sweden, there’s “Brittsommar” (out of “Birgitta” and “Britta”, having their name days around the time, October 7). In Finland, the period is today called “intiaanikesä”, a direct translation, but historically a warm period in autumn was named after Bartholomew, his saint day being in late August. In Gaelic Ireland, the phenomenon is called “fómhar beag na ngéanna” (little autumn of the geese). In temperate parts of South America the phenomenon is known as “Veranico”, “Veranito” or “Veranillo” (literally, “little summer”), and usually occurs in early autumn between late April and mid-May, when it is known as “Veranico de Maio” (“May’s little summer”) or as “Veranito de San Juan” (“Saint John’s little summer”)

Pea Green Cafe and Supper Solutions Specials

Super tasty specials from our kitchen this week see below for details. We’re open each morning (Tuesday to Saturday) and serve a range of breakfasts until 11.30. Lunch is from 12noon to 2PM in the cafe, and delivery for lunch or supper each day too. In between times we serve a great range of hot and cold drinks, fresh baked pastries and delicious cakes. We serve our guests in our riverside garden and terrace that provide a wonderful and tranquil setting to relax in, with a unique perspective on the river Teme. If the weather takes a turn for the worse we have indoor tables in both the cafe or The Red Room, booking is advisable.

New arrival this week. I’ve just served some coffee outside on the riverside garden and the customers reported seeing a baby heron. It’s been a few years since I’ve spotted one of those here. We used to have a regular local heron about 10 years ago, it would be nice to have one regularly visiting again. The customer’s told me they also caught sight of the kingfisher 3 times. The diversity of wildlife that can be seen here is wonderful, it was about this time last year that we had regular visits from a female otter and her cubs. With autumn coming on and the trees already beginning to turn, the ever changing backdrop is well worth a visit to view.

Pea Green Cafe Supper Solutions.

Some delicious specials to tantalize your taste buds this week, see below for the menu. Available for lunch or evening home delivery, or lunch at the cafe. As we are now well into the second half of the year, August is upon us and the nights are beginning to draw in. The good run of weather has meant that most of our guests have been happy to sit outside, however as the weather cools this will definitely not be a first choice for many people. However we do have a solution in the Red Room, our new indoor dining area, available for bookings.

So as we are on the banks of the River Teme I thought I’d share a few details about it with you. The river’s source is in The Kerry Hills near Dolfor, and it flows more or less along the border between England and Wales as far as Brampton Bryan. It rises at 1660 feet above sea level and travels 81 miles until it joins the River Severn at Powick which is 46 feet above sea level. It’s the second largest tributary to the Severn. The whole of the river was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1996. The River Teme was one of two large scale pilot projects announced by Severn Trent Water to introduce bathing quality water, alongside the River Leam in Warwickshire. So hopefully if the scheme is effective you’d be able to swim to us safely for your lunch!

Our phone number is 07983 941856, to arrange a home delivery OR to reserve a table. You can order a delivery at any time, days in advance if you wish. The latest time to order for same day delivery of lunch is 11AM and supper 3PM. However sometimes we are fully booked by the cut off point so the earlier you let us know the better. The phone is available 8.30AM to 7.30PM

Pea Green Cafe Supper Solutions Specials

Well what a week that was. Hope you have survived the extreme heat that seemed to take over everyone’s thoughts, actions and behaviours last week. One of the great things about our Red Room dining area is that it faces north and is encased in solid brick and stone walls. It remains relatively cool even in the high summer, so if it’s tranquility and cool you are looking for, we have it here. Indoors or out.
This week’s special menu is below, tasty, fresh, unique and highly recommended. This is of course in addition to our regular extensive men. Home delivery, eat in the cafe or on the beautiful riverside terrace, described here:

The location is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest where it forms the South-Eastern corner stone of the Conservation Area of the historic market town of Ludlow.  When looking at the river Teme from the Tea Garden of the Pea Green Cafe; what one  sees today is not so much the natural river, but rather a millpond caused by the Casemill weir downstream. The river, in the summer months, would naturally be approximately 60cm deep. It is deeper than that now due to river dredging carried out in the late sixties.  In the 1960s a storm drain was installed on the site to alleviate pressure and flooding at the plant in Steventon. During the installation, Roman Engineering work was discovered that made up the landing point of the Ford.  The river Teme was forded here to take advantage of a natural slope on the opposite bank that would allow cattle and carts access to the Hogs back of land that forks one way to Wigmore with the other fork leading to Leominster and on to Kington.  Kington is significant to the site as it is the oldest known Celtic Royal Court in England.  This main North South route would have used the ford as the most convenient crossing point of the Teme and was probably well established long before the Romans conquered Britain in 45 A.D.  This early history has a bearing on the property, as the site was developed to exploit the typology geology.  The ford dictated the layout of Old Street, as can be seen from the driveway of the Pea Green Cafe.  A Saxon boathouse was located next door which would have been needed for large parts of the year when the river levels rose. The normal level of the River in average weather conditions is between 0.92m and 1.33m.

Delivery & Cafe specials, and a little more history about the cafe.

A spicy selection of specials for this week, see below for the menu on offer in addition to our regular extensive menu. This is available for lunch and supper deliveries and for lunch service in the cafe. Weather looks a bit changeable this week so if you’re thinking of coming down for a meal remember you can book the Red Room for indoor dining as well as the beautiful garden area. If you’re looking for a relaxing place for refreshment, you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere more tranquil than our riverside terrace.

Continuing on from last week a bit more about the property
By 1695 milling operations had moved upstream leaving the site to be individually owned and used as dwelling by William Deverall who was a billeting officer for the victorious parliamentary army (probably not too popular in Royalist Ludlow).  He used the property to billet 5 wounded soldiers.  This is the earliest record of the site being used as lodgings.  This would be a common use for the property over the next 300 years, but not exclusively.  The layout of the floor plan of the main building is simple and consists basically of a room on either side of a centrally-placed entrance hall from which the stairs rise.  The doorway at the rear suggests a medieval layout.  The ground floor pattern is repeated on the first floor.

Today is the 125th Anniversary of the modern Olympic games. The first Games held under the auspices of the IOC was hosted in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens in 1896. The Games brought together 14 nations and 241 athletes who competed in 43 events. However the modern Olympic movement is older than that as I’m sure many of you know , given it’s local Shropshire connection.  In 1850, an Olympian Class was started by William Penny Brookes at Much Wenlock, in Shropshire, England. In 1859, Brookes changed the name to the Wenlock Olympian Games. This annual sports festival continues to this day. The Wenlock Olympian Society was founded by Brookes on 15 November 1860.

Supper Solutions Special Menu and A Notable Birthday

What a lovely spring morning we have today here in Ludlow central! Splashes of colour popping up in gardens and blossoms budding on the trees, forecast not quite so good however; suggest you stay home and order in a delivery! I’m pleased to bring you our delicious specials to supplement our regular menu. Unique recipe meals freshly cooked and delivered to your door. See below for details.

March 9th is the birthday of one William Cobbett, born in Surrey in 1763. He had an extraordinarily full life, served 5 years as a soldier in the British army in America. Self exiled to France and America, after critisising the low pay and harsh tratment of regular soldiers and fearing arrest for publisising his findings. He founded the forerunner of Hansard, the parliamentary official records, imprisoned for libel for objecting to flogging of militiamen, was elected to parliament as an MP. And so much more besides. He’s best known for his writings as a pamphleteer and his most famous book “Rural Rides” is still in print 199 years after publication.  Thanks to the Gutenberg project you can read a copy or download for free, here’s an extract about his visit to Shrewsbury

I cannot quit Shrewsbury without expressing the great satisfaction that I derived from my visit to that place. …. I saw not one single person in the place that I had ever seen before; yet I never had more cordial shakes by the hand; in proportion to their numbers, not more at Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Halifax, Leeds, or Nottingham, or even Hull. I was particularly pleased with the conduct of the young gentlemen at Shrewsbury

Pea Green Cafe Supper Solution specials and England’s 1st cookery school

Hello and welcome to March. See menu below for details of our specials today. Delicious, nutritious, freshly prepared food delivered to your door at lunch time or in the evening. Just £7.50 for main courses and £9.95 with a pudding.

March 1st 1734 is the day that the earliest known cooking school in England was opened. It was was run by Edward Kidder (d. 1739) in various London locations during the later part of his life. And just as modern day TV chefs always have books to sell so did this pie maker turned teacher. According to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography “It is a valuable record of 170 standard English dishes of the day, accompanied by attractive designs for pie shapes and decorations. The first recipe for puff pastry to appear in print is Kidder’s”. As you can see from the image below it is engraved copper plate rather than moveable type production, so quite difficult to read to my modern eye. Then of course there’s the variation of the English language over 300 years.

Here is one of his receipts with a local connection (!)
