Today, October 26, marks the 158th anniversary of the foundation of the Red Cross. Until the middle of the nineteenth century, there were no organized or well-established army nursing systems for casualties, and no safe and protected institutions to accommodate and treat those who were wounded on the battlefield. The idea of an organization to address this was inspired by Swiss businessman Henry Dunant, who published a book “A Memory of Solferino”. The suffering of thousands of men on both sides of the Battle of Solferino in 1859 upset Dunant. Many were left to die due to lack of care. He proposed creating national relief societies, made up of volunteers, trained in peacetime to provide neutral and impartial help to relieve suffering in times of war.
