And following on from last week, this brings you up to date with theproperty:-
The site is outside of the town walls, and due to its history in relation to a small wealthy town, it was beyond the pale and the area never became fashionable. The property has seen a steady decline since the1800s, being variously lodgings and a public house. In 1872 it was known as the Bay House and prior to that the Hand and Shears and would regularly house 17 lodgers. In the 1920s it was known as Rams Boarding House for Gentlemen of the Road. The Mittons purchased it in 1959 and it became a dairy and milk delivery business. Mr Clarke bought from them in 1978 and it became the Riverside Guest House and a taxi business. The present owners bought it in 1987 and it has been a family home until October 2016 when it started operations as Pea Green Cafe.
The plan below was drawn by Thomas Telford in 1805 and has Old Street marked as “Old Mill Street” and describes this property as “Old building partly brick partly timber covered with tiles”.
